About Sarcopenia and why it matters
Since 2016, sarcopenia has been recognized as a disease (ICD-10, M62.84), which is commonly seen in elderly other than osteopenia. Studies have found that those with high risk of sarcopenia will lead to various health problems including cognitive impairment (OR=2.5), depression (OR=1.82), osteoporosis (OR=3.06), fracture (OR=1.71), functional decline (OR=3.03), metabolic syndrome (OR=2.01), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (OR=1.54), mortality (OR=3.6), diabete (OR=1.64) and hypertension (OR=1.29). In view of these, the HKSPF will work to prevent, diagnose and reverse the onset of muscle loss.
Our Works
The HKSPF believes in prescribing exercise and dietary interventions to reverse the effects of sarcopenia to improve living conditions for a stronger Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Sarcopenia Foundation (HKSPF) aims to raise awareness about Sarcopenia through Education, Treatment and Research.
Approach 1: Educate
The HKSF will educate and raise awareness of sarcopenia to help prevent future cases, especially among HongKongers under the age of 30.
Approach 2: Prevent & Treat
The HKSF will prevent and reverse early-onset sarcopenia and improve symptoms of chronic metabolic diseases. Patients will be referred to qualified facilities, including physicians, physiotherapists, and personal trainers for comprehensive care.
Approach 3: Research
The HKSF will fund research on sarcopenia prevention, including studies on the relationship between sarcopenia, dietary protein intake, and high-intensity exercise. We aim to enhance scientific knowledge and raise awareness of this critical health issue.
