Educate, Treat, Research: Fighting Sarcopenia for a Healthier Future
Educate
The HKSF will educate and raise awareness of sarcopenia to help prevent future cases, especially among HongKongers under the age of 30.
Treat
The HKSF will prevent and reverse early-onset sarcopenia and improve symptoms of chronic metabolic diseases. Patients will be referred to qualified facilities, including physicians, physiotherapists, and personal trainers for comprehensive care.
Research
The HKSF will fund research on sarcopenia prevention, including studies on the relationship between sarcopenia, dietary protein intake, and high-intensity exercise. We aim to enhance scientific knowledge and raise awareness of this critical health issue.

Why this issue matter?
Sarcopenia is a critical issue among the elderly, affecting mobility and independence. It significantly increases the risk of falls, fractures, and functional decline. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential to improve quality of life and reduce healthcare costs associated with fall-related injuries, allowing older adults to maintain their independence.
– The Impact of Sarcopenia on Mobility and Independence
Research links sarcopenia to cognitive impairment and depression, with affected individuals being 2.5 times more likely to experience cognitive decline. Recognizing sarcopenia as a mental health concern is crucial. Early intervention can improve mental well-being, enhancing social engagement and overall life satisfaction among older adults, promoting healthier aging.
– Sarcopenia's Link to Mental Health Issues
Sarcopenia prevalence is alarming, with affected individuals being 3.6 times more likely to face premature death. This highlights the need for preventive measures and early interventions. Strength training and proper nutrition can improve health outcomes, promoting healthier aging and extending life expectancy, allowing older adults to enjoy their later years.
